Cactus. Good ol nasty, dirty, down and deadly, blues-salted, guttersnake-crawlin' rock and roll. Just the way it's supposed to be.

I suggest you ask him. His site is on MySpace, just type in "Jim McCarty" and "Mystery Train". Back then the std was just a Fender Twin Reverb amp, Fuzz Tone, Vox Cry Baby wahwah, and an EchoPlex with a bigger amp set-up on tour. Digital units eventually replaced the old tape looping Echoplex - to keep the rhythm guitar track going when playing lead. I don't think Jim ever used one of those, but I maybe wrong. I know Tim used a 2X Ampeg SVT w/10's and Fender Jazz Bass & Fuzz Tone

I am impressed with what I have listened to tonight, hearing Cactus for the first time ever on different youtube vids...however, on this song I am reminded of what I hear trying to listen to Steppenwolf....guys who are obviously right wrecked while trying to record, missed notes, + obvious mistakes, that sort of stuff...I am sure they would've enjoyed another attempt at capturing a definitive take. But they were a product of the times, and that makes the music more honest than anything nowdays!
