Allan Cumming's performance is exactly how I think the emcee should be played; lanky, seductively ominous, provocative. Out of all the play's I've read, seen, and studied, I think Sally Bowles and the emcee are some of the hardest and most draining characters to play well.

scorpioninpink - it is not a threesomeit is a poly relationship, they have threesomes yes but defining it as a threesome is simply wrong.

This might seem like a weird question, but i'm being serious. How does he not get turned on when they keep touching him like that?

When I was a little kid, my aunt and grandpa taught me to sing this song... I had no idea what I was singing, but I had fun with it.

LOL I can't tell which one is in drag. Is it the one who "sleeps on the right"?

Totally agree with your assessment of the two versions. For me, it's kind of like comparing apples and oranges, because Cumming and Grey existed in two completely different musicals. The original film version was more subtle and used sexuality as the language of politics. This 90s version of Cabaret was a little more "surface" and gritty, intended to scandalize the audience. I personally prefer the film version also, but Cumming is ON FIRE here and I think he's the best part of this adaptation.

Jesus! Why is everyone going on about how the performance was 'too sexual' it's a song about threesomes, goddammit!!

To go along with that point, Alan Cumming's never really captured the feel of the Cabaret in itself. The Cabaret is where you went to forget your troubles, as stated in the "Willkommen" song where they say leave your troubles outside. Alan Cumming's just seems to hold in all the troubles, rather than forget.
