The bassist is Al Morgan, from New Orleans like most top-shelf early jazz upright players. My friend (who's info I'm passing on) once heard and had a nice and informative chat with his tenor sax and clarinet-playing older brother, Andrew. The tune is by Harold Arlen and his usual lyricist writing partner, Ted Koehler.

I think it is important to keep an eye on the past. Especially when it comes to the great great grandfathers of modern day music and stage presence.

So Mini was Joe's 'Frail' (girl friend??). She was also into the use of opium?. But in the next version, this 'Mini the Moocher', she was out with Smokey. Very involved story? Can someone give a little more light?? :)

He's talking about both things, opium ("kicking the gong around", as they already said, and by saying that smokey was a "cokey", which is the same as saying "cokehead" today.

"Kicking the gong around" is 20's slang for opium.

Elvis? Please study some American cultural history. Elvis Pressly used to hang out in the Paradise lounge and other black clubs in Memphis. Elvis was trying to imitate what the black performers were doing. The Afro-American performers you name her were originals:THE CREATORS!!!! The engineer who first recorded Elvis says he chose him because he was looking for a white guy who could sing with some of the feeling of black singers! Check it out!

One of the best movies of all time, and this is probably the highlight. Although the attempted suicide with Arthur Tracy singing in the background is a great one, too.

From James Brown. And Brown got it from here. There's a bit of Elvis in there, too. :-)
