This song is about the Battle of Blair Mountain, a five-day civil uprising in West Virginia that began on August 25, 1921, and actually one of the largest armed rebellions in US history post-American Civil War. After many stressful events throughout the previous years, approximately 10,000 coal miners fought against an army of nearly 2,000, assembled by the county sheriff, Don Chafin, and funded by the local coal mine operators, in an attempt to unionize many of the region's coal mines.During the battle, private planes actually dropped small explosive and gas bombs on the miners, though to little effect. The United States Army intervened on September 2nd, which quickly caused the conflict to come to an end. Upwards of ~130 people died and nearly a thousand were arrested after all was over. An interesting subject with interesting social outcomes for anyone that may be into American History.
