The song was written in 1936 by Bob Nolan -- it's a fine example of "western music" -- as in the forgotten half of "country and western." Marty Robbins probably had the most famous version, but this is an excellent rendition by a man who's artistic ability is all too often overlooked.

I had never heard this until just now, but my grandpa always sings the "cool, clear water" part whenever the subject comes up. He can't carry a tune in a bucket, but this was instantly recognizable, haha! I never knew where it came from, and I'm so happy I found this!

My Dad would play this record (fifty odd years ago). It's still a great song today.

."Cool Water" is a song written in 1936 by Bob Nolan. It is about a man and his mule, Dan, and a mirage in the desert.

This is good, but no one should even bother singing it except Hank.... Sr. that is.

I envisioned he was a lonesome lost cowboy in the mid-1800's out West who lost his way and was desparate for water - without which he and his horse would perish. No cell phones etc., besides that, probably not a White man around for perhaps 100 miles. When you ran out of water back in those days and were lost in the desert, you were screwed, blued and tattooed! No kidding, I just always thought (from my childhood when my dad used to play it on his guitar) that it was a man talking to his horse.

Great performance by one of America's classic balladeers; thanks for posting. Two more comments: 1.) The true, authentic version is by the man who wrote the song, Bob Nolan, and the amazing Sons of the Pioneers; their best version is in the 2-cd set "The Essential Collection" on the Soundies label, which documents the Sons' fabulous WLS radio transcriptions from 1940-41. 2.) Another great version is Roy Rogers/Dale Evans/Mitch Miller's on Golden Records--"16 Great Songs of the Old West."
