Buffy Sainte Marie's ''Soldier Blue''

I'll tell you a story and its a true one and Ill tell it like you understand

And I aint gonna talk like some history maid.

I look out and I see a land.

Young and lovely. Hard and strong

For fifty thousand years weve danced her praises.

Prayed our thanks and weve just begun. Yes, Yes

Yes this is my country.

Young and growing.

Free and flowing. See to see.

Yes, this is my country.

Ripe and bearing miracles

in ever pond and tree.

Her spirit walks the high country.

Shes giving free wild samples.

And setting an example how to give.

Yes this is my country

Retching and turning

She is like a baby learning how to live

i can stand upon a hill at dawn

Look all around me.

Feel her surround me.

Soldier blue

Cant you see her life has just begun

Beating inside us. Telling us shes here to guide us.

Soldier blue, Soldier blue, Soldier blue.

Cant you see that theres another way to love her.

This is my country

And I sprang from her

And Im learning how to count upon her.

Tall trees and the corn is high country.

I guess I love her.

And Im learning how to take care of her

When the news stories get me down

I take a drink of freedom to think of

North America from toe to crown

It's never long before

I know just why I belong here

Soldier Blue, Soldier Blue

Can't you see that there's another way to love her

As an 8-yr-old Nigerian girl in the early 80s, not only did this movie impact my view of the world, this song, with its haunting melody, sank it's claws into my psyche and refused to let go. So, finally, today (after humming it for several days), I decided to google the movie and the song if only to know who sang it and why the lyrics resonated so much. Thank you, Buffy, for this song.

Had to watch this film in high school. It was eye opening to say the least. It has colored my view of indigenous people, and the atrocities committed by the US Cavalry, ever since.

There were some old Westerns that actually were fair to the Native American.....Ivividly remember Cheyenne Autumn. I also think Chivington was the inspiration for the character of Frank Skimmerhorn in Centennial.

When it first came out, I saw this film with a fellow Canadian in a theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland. Leaving the theatre we were afraid to open our mouths as, with our accents, we'd have been lynched. Powerful movie, especially for its time.

I saw Soldier Blue when I was 19 years old and I left the cinema with tears in my eyes. I didn't realise it was based on a true story. Many years later, whilst looking for me, I sat at the scene of the Sand Creek Massacre and I understood. In that moment I found what I was looking for. I wrote "Sand Creek...lest we forget". For its time Soldier Blue was considered quite a shocking film. The persecution of native Americans is a disgusting blot on the history of USA, as is the Conquistadores terrible atrocities perpetrated on the native South Americans. At least films like Dances with Wolves ( albeit with a lot of dramatic irony) go a long way to show a different side to some Americans. The Brit were no better, I am ashamed of my country's history; all usually done in the of a Christian god, now there's a surprise

It is important to remember the Sand Creek Massacre. It was a cowardly and horrific attack by the US Army on mostly women and children Indians. An Army Officer is usually has the highest Morals and Standards. It is shameful what "COL" Chivington and his followers did. A few under his command refused to fire.
