It's about her getting addicted to codeine after she was prescribed it for a throat infection, this happens to a lot of people just because it came from a doctor doesn't mean they are less addictive.codeine is highly addictive especially if you have to take it for long time.I love her voice, very talented singer songwriter

I like the sound of this song a lot, & enjoy listening to it, but its message fits in too well with B.S. pro-drug-war propaganda/disinformation. I don't like that aspect. For one thing, the song seems to imply a codeine addiction or codeine abuse is much worse than alcohol abuse. Ridiculous. The most dangerously impairing popular drug by far is not opiates, crack, meth, ecstasy, or LSD. It's good old legal alcohol (think accidents & violence). Alcohol also causes deadly heart & liver disease, cancer, & diabetes - diseases codeine & illicit drugs do not cause. It's much easier to be a fully functional opiates addict than a fully functional alcoholic. Buffy, as a first nations person, should know better than most that the high rates of violence experienced on too many native reserves are linked to rampant alcohol abuse & people getting "crazy drunk," NOT to "cod'ne" use or any illicit drug!

And my belly is craving,I got a shakin' in my head,Feel like I'm dyin' and I wish I was dead.If I lived till tomorrow that'll be a long time,But I'll reel and I'll fall and rise on cod'ineAnd it's real, and it's real, one more time.Well, when I was a young girl I learned not to careAbout whiskey and from it I often did swear. My mother and father said whiskey is a curse,But the fate of their baby is a many times worse,And it's real, and it's real, one more time.Stay away from the cities, stay away from the towns,Stay away from the men pushin' the cod'ine around.Stay away from the stores where the remedy is fine,For better your pain than be caught on cod'ine,And it's real, and it's real, one more time. You'll forget you're a woman, you'll forget about men,Try it just once, and you'll try it again. You'll forget about life, you'll forget about time,And you'll live off your days as a slave to cod'ine. And it's real, and it's real, one more time. But if I die tomorrow, still one thing I've done,I'd heeded the warning that I got when I was young. My one satisfaction it comes when I thinkThat I'm living my life without bendin' to drinkAnd it's real, and it's real, one more time. And my belly is craving, I got a shaking in my headI feel like I'm dyin' and I wish I was dead.If I live till tomorrow that'll be a long time,For I'll reel and I'll fall and I'll die on cod'ine,And it's real, and it's real, one more time.

It is very understandable that doctors and nurses have little or no empathy for great (we Catholics call it "exquisite agony") PAIN. After all, it is not their pain and, well, they do have to decide on lunch and lots of OTHER important stuff, too !

Been taking oxycodone for about 20 yrs. now. I think my doctor ha s me on a maintenance dose. It doesn't seem to be an over the top problem if I miss a dose or two. I get kind of sick though.

I saw Buffy at La Cage in Cleveland in fall, 1963 I think--remember her singing "Cod'ine" like it was yesterday. It was raw and in your face! Put yourself 50 years ago and hear this song--shit! My buddy, Big Dave, sang with her!
