On this day in 1978 {May 18th} the bio-movie 'The Buddy Holly Story' had its world premiere in Dallas, Texas...The film was nominated for three Academy Awards; won for 'Best Music Score'; Gary Busey lost to Jon Voight in 'Coming Home' in the 'Best Actor' category...Exactly twenty years earlier on May 18th, 1958 the Crickets' "Maybe Baby" was tied* at #88 on Billboard's Top 100 chart; two months earlier on March 16th, 1958 it had peaked at #18 {for 1 week} and it stayed on the chart for 14 weeks…* According to Billboard Magazine it was tied at #88 with "Breathless" by Jerry Lee Lewis and "Don't” by Elvis...

Charles Hardin Holley (September 7, 1936 – February 3, 1959), known as Buddy Holly, was an American musician and singer-songwriter and a pioneer of rock and roll. Although his success lasted only a year and a half before his death in an airplane crash, Holly is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most influential creative force in early rock and roll."His works and innovations inspired and influenced contemporary and later musicians, notably the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Costello, and exerted a profound influence on popular music. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Holly number 13 on its list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. "Maybe Baby" live 1958 on BBC's "Off The Record".

Saying 'Buddy Holly and the Crickets' is like saying 'John Lennon and the Beatles'.

Holly released 2 albums in his lifetime one with the Crickets 9and the Picks) "The Chirping Crickets" and solo which was self-titled." there was no background vocal on the self-titled album. except for "Rave On" but that was NOT the Picks.

Probably not even that high tech, lol. Sounds like someone just held a microphone to their tv speaker and recorded it on a portable reel to reel (hell, maybe even a wire recorder).

It's much better without the backing vocals.

Love hearing this without those damned backing vocals, always hated those...didn't like em on most of Elvis' stuff either.
