Buckshot LeFonque was a musical group project of Branford Marsalis. The name Buckshot LeFonque was a pseudonym used by jazz saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley for contractual reasons on the album Here Comes Louis Smith (1958). After playing with Sting, Miles Davis and other artists, Marsalis founded this band to create a new sound by merging classical jazz with rock, pop, R&B and hip-hop influences.

Once again I find myself returning to this joint to comment on how dope it is. Too real for the average.

I never heard Branford talk about these two albums he did with BLeF. I heard Chris Rock and Spike Lee talk them up. Tremendous stuff. Wynton Marsalis criticized Branford for dropping these tracks (Wynton is a traditionalist) but he was dying to work with DJ Premier who was ill about this time (see early Gang Starr). I saw them in Philly with Fishbone, and they burned that mother out. Even Questlove has said that it was surprising that Branford never wanted to talk about this alter-ego trip he took.Their are rumors that he had a nose candy problem @ this time.He also wanted to show Quincy Jones that he could top his hit "Back On The Block". If you can, get both cd's, they are sic. Also, if you can, try to find a band called "The Brooklyn Funk Essentials". They are similar, if you like BLeF.
