**UPDATE**

10/03/2012: SUBS ADDED TO VIDEO.

10/03/2012: LYRICS AND LOCALISATION ADDED TO DESCRIPTION.

This is the ending music from the first episode of the Bubblegum Crisis OVA. Of course, The Replicants don't sing this song... but I felt these pics really went. Naturally, I've only used proper Bubblegum Crisis images too.

It's a tremendous song. Cool, atmospheric, relaxed and chilled. Katayama's voice is incredible.

Here are the lyrics in Japanese followed by an English version I have localized, and a few notes.

Hey Mr. Dandy, Hey Mr. Joy

Hey Mr. Dandy, Hey Mr. Joy

Hey Mr. Dandy, Hey Mr. Joy

Hey Mr. Dandy, Hey Mr. Joy

Hey Mr. Dandy, Hey Mr. Joy

Hey Mr. Dandy, Hey Mr. Joy

English Localisation:

[Verse 1]

The day ends, the commotion bathed in shards of light.

The sunset on the glass, a swaying dance of sparkling reflections.

[Refrain 1]

When dreams can't become reality,

then they only lead to pain.

[Chorus]

Hey Mr. Dandy, Hey Mr. Joy

The blinding light just flows and flows...

Hey Mr. Dandy, Hey Mr. Joy

with the burden of love lost.

[Verse 2]

Swimming in sea of magic, 24 hours a day,

the city lights bring a tide of summer blues.

[Refrain 2]

When there is light,

the shadows will weep once more.

[Chorus x 2]

****************************************************************************

I never realised the lyrics for this song were quite so good until I got into them. The recurring theme of light within the words is sheer poetry. My overwhelming feeling towards this song is now, "It's far too short."

I used to like it just as an 'anime' song. But now, I think it's one of my favourite songs ever.

In terms of translation, I have not provided a literal translation, however, it is still close to the source text. I wanted something that not only reflected the semantic meaning of the song, but also some of the poetry within. Naturally, I listened to the song whilst working on it, and drew my inspiration from what I felt from the song.

For those who use LO (Librarium-online) you may remember I had characters called 'Mr Dandy' and 'Mr Joy'.

This is the song which inspired both of them.

Thank you. Thank you!

the name boomer comes from the fact that after their creation they saved Japan from the economic bubble crash of 2020 that followed the 2nd great kanto earthquake. Genom's robots created a boom in industry and were given the moniker boomers.

This sounds so much like Four in the Morning by Night Ranger

Dear Mr Dandy, Please make the voices go away. They tell me bad things.

My pleasure. All I did was upload and translate it, though :) Can't really claim credit for other people's work. However, it makes me happy to meet people who enjoy this song.

I was speaking to a friend about this, and they thought that it had something to do with the economic bubble of Japan at the time. Considering when this was made, and the sheer quality of the original screams 'bubble', I feel this is a likely explanation. Although it seems odd, the Japanese are very much aware of this bubble.

Sorry, I meant the vid for the Bubblegum Crash Opening Theme. Should be on the sidebar for this video.

I have learned to take Bubblegum two ways: 1) the really basic notion of a sticky situation that continues escalating and growing bigger (like a bubble) until it goes beyond breaking point and implodes. Or 2) I have no source for this anymore but I one person once remarked to me that Bubblegum in the title was referencing some type of Nanotechnology that utilized that word in its name or function.

Hi there. Nice theory. I tried to research it and came across this on the Wrigley's website: "Boomer is an undisputed leader in the gum category since 1995" I'm not saying that this is all the information there is, but if this statement is true, then Bubblegum crisis and Blade Runner pre date boomer gum by about a decade on aggregate. Anyone else got any info?

I have thought of that for a long time, my hypothesis is that the name of the Boomers may come from Wrigley's Boomer bubblegum, but I don't have any information about how old is that brand.

@StrangeAttractor1 Hi again. I have localised (translated) the song and added subtitles to the video and also some more details in the description. I hope my efforts can help those of us who don't understand Japanese to appreciate this song's awesomeness a little bit more. I've also sent you a message via youtube. Cheers.

@StrangeAttractor1 Cool, I'll try and get on it then. For your information i checked out the wikipedia pages for this series in both English and Japanese. Neither page had information as to the origins of the name. Maybe an interview is out there, but it'd require more research. Even if I don't know why, linguistically, it's a great juxtaposition of two terms unlikely to be connected. Some juxtapositions just sound wrong, like, I dunno, 'Donkey Tornado'. But Bubblegum crisis sounds bloody cool.

@Karmoon7 Yes, please. :) I also wonder why is the anime name "Bubblegum Crisis"? Does anyone know?

@StrangeAttractor1 I didn't realise people would be interested. I'm a professional translator, if people are interested, i can try and add subtitles or annotations. I've not heard much of the English version, the guy's voice is totally wrong for the song compared with Kenji Katayama. (he can still sing really well, though :) )
