Kind of eye opening when an unreleased song by Springsteen is better than most released songs today. To be fair, this song is incredible. It seems to combine a lot of the elements from not only the Darkness album, but Born to Run and Nebraska as well. I'll be listening to this nonstop for at least a week.

Part 2 . But YES, I totally agree - ANYTHING "New" to most of his fans, ESPECIALLY OLD GOLD like this, would be quite a treat for our ears. START THE GRASS ROOTS CAMPAIGN!

I assume you remember who "Turn 'em Loose Bruce" was? New York State Supreme Court. Judge Bruce McMarion Wright. He earned the nickname "Turn 'em loose Bruce" because of his low bail practices, especially to minority defendants. I actually saw him and heard him speak "Back in the day" at a "Men's Club Breakfast" (with my Dad) at the now (sadly) defunct Monsey Jewish Center (NY). He was considered quite radical and DID seem to be quite a character. As an adult I could relate better to his side.

Passionate as always but you can imagine why it was left off the album. "Darkness" wasn't exactly infused with gospel. Bruce's vocal style on this track is also different (assuming it's correct that this was a Darkness outtake) In the "tracks" collection, Bruce explains why some good things had to be left out.

listen to the deadness of reverberation on his singing. why was that a trend in recording studios in the '70's

In response to a lot of comments about who wrote the song, etc.: This is clearly "Mona" with different lyrics. "Mona (I Need You Baby)" was a Bo Diddley song from 1957. As noted by "ftblrg" Springsteen has used it in concert as an intro to "She's The One" because they both have the "Bo Diddley beat." Springsteen's live versions, as well as the music here, are closer to the Rolling Stones' cover of "Mona," with the pulsing reverb guitar effect.
