This song could also be entitled 'Draft dodger steals veteran and brothers girlfriend and job then chases him out of the country'

Springsteen's 1982 Nebraska version - the original - is best. You never feel anything but Joe's deep abiding empathy for his wayward brother. Cash's Joe is more punitive in his relationship to Frankie, and as such lacks the nobility and emotional richness of Springsteen's Joe. Through his differences in inflection, Springsteen's original subtly invokes certain cultural values - a stubborn blue collar code of familial loyalty, intrinsic decency of spirit - that touch. The same basic Joe appears here in 2007, but without the live band dressings, Nebraska Joe is bare, immediate, visceral, relatable.

Apples and oranges, my friends. Johnny did an amazing cover. As a long time Springsteen fan, I like this better, yet I love that an icon such as Johnny felt strongly enough to cover it. I'm pretty sure Bruce wouldn't have given permission for tJohnny to cover it, if he didn't fel it was an honor.

i can really do without bruce's "accent". it sounds forced and phony. and cash's version sucks. it reduces him to just a voice. bruce's original version is so great- with the subtle touches of deep emotion and mystery that he succeeds, strangely enough, in making cash sound like the sinatra of american folk song. was a little disappointed too to find out theres no song on record for night of the johnsontown flood. ha! but this is still a great song.

Cash has a way of making songs his own even if they aren't songs he wrote. Personally, I prefer the Cash version, but all props to Springsteen for writing a great song...would love to have heard Cash do Atlantic City!

i'd like to think if johnny were alive he'd say he was just playing a beautiful song by a modern master. he introduced people to a classic, like Sunday Morning Coming Down years before. this is as close as we will ever get to a passing of the torch as we'll ever get. i miss Johnny so much, but i thank the powers at be for Bruce Springsteen.

Moi j'aime bien la musique country comme celle du Boss et non ce que l'on entends dans le feuilleton "Johnny texas ranger "
