I like Bruce, but the Byrds version is outstanding and flows better

Just great. I'm teaching Of Mice and Men to my sophomores right now. I used this song and an L.A. Times article about the 28 "Deportees" from 1948 to connect to the themes of the Steinbeck novel. To my surprise, the kids were connected to the song and story. I hope the connection to the novel is recognized. As always, thank you Bruce Springsteen.

Shabby next to Cisco Houston and many others. Poor beautiful song, it's sad to massacre a masterpiece, but it's Springsteen ...

One of the greatest songs ever written, any time, anywhere. Too bad the recording cuts off before the very end.

Many artists have recorded this song. My personal favorite is by Johnny Rodriguez. Check it out.

Thanks so much for posting this excellent version of "Deportee". Springsteen hasn't just sung about girls & cars, of course. He has stood up for working class folks his entire career.

Nice upload, but re the notes - this may be Bruce's "premier" of the song, but it had of course been covered by scores and scores of major artists before Springsteen took a stab at it. He does a creditable job on a number that as a folk-styled composition isn't exactly in his wheelhouse. YT has great versions as well by Arlo Guthrie, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, the Kingston Trio, the Byrds, and many more.
