I heard Manfred's Mann's version of this and "Spirit in the Night" long before Springsteen's originals. I prefer "The Boss's"! God bless.

I was a roadie with them when this was recorded. Yes, they rehearsed in a garage at the time. I can attest to that fact. In fact I wrote a book about it. It's called Upstage, Springsteen and Me.
