Lyrics - Backstreets (Studio Version)

One soft infested summer, me and Terry became friends

Trying in vain to breathe the fire we was born in

Catching rides to the outskirts, tying faith between our teeth

Sleeping in that old abandoned beach house, getting wasted in the heat

And hiding on the backstreets

Hiding on the backstreets

With a love so hard and filled with defeat

Running for our lives at night on them backstreets

Slow dancing in the dark on the beach at Stockton's Wing

Where desperate lovers park, we sat with the last of the Duke Street Kings

Huddled in our cars, waiting for the bells that ring

In the deep heart of the night they set us loose of everything

To go running on the backstreets

Running on the backstreets

Terry, you swore we'd live forever

Taking it on them backstreets together

Endless juke joints and Valentino drag

Where famous dancers scraped the tears up off the street, dressed down in rags

Running into the darkness, some hurt bad, some really dying

At night sometimes it seemed you could hear the whole damn city crying

Blame it on the lies that killed us, blame it on the truth that ran us down

You can blame it all on me, Terry, it don't matter to me now

When the breakdown hit at midnight, there was nothing to say

But I hated him, and I hated you when you went away

Laying here in the dark, you're like an angel on my chest

Just another tramp of hearts crying tears of faithlessness

Remember all the movies, Terry, we'd go see

Trying to learn to walk like the heroes we thought we had to be

And after all this time, to find we're just like all the rest

Stranded in the park and forced to confess

To hiding on the backstreets

Hiding on the backstreets

Where we swore forever friends

On the backstreets until the end

Hiding on the backstreets

Hiding on the backstreets

Hiding on the backstreets

Hiding on the backstreets

My headphones started acting up a couple of weeks ago, so that stuff on one of the channels was coming across much more loudly than the stuff in the other channel. Until I got them fixed, most songs sounded like crap, but somehow Backstreets still sounded amazing. There are all sorts of little hidden piano melodies and even bass riffs that come across very subtly in the song, but which sound amazing. To take just one example, listen closely to the pretty piano melodies going on during the bridge. A real rock opera kind of vibe. Bruce's voice is the center act here, but somehow those subtle melodies bring the energy level even higher.tl;dr There's really so much going on in this tune, that it's hard to understand how they found all the sonic space for it. A real masterpiece.

Was Lucky enough to be part of this scene and cruising the strip in Asbury Park with our "drag cars" during these exciting times, Springsteen, Southside, Shakes and on it goes, way too many to remember. Great times and some of the best music and artists ever. Period.

It always annoys me how this song is never on any of B.S's greatest hits. It's just so damn good.

I still think that ‘Backstreets’ is still one of the very most powerful pieces of music that has ever been written and performed by anyone. When, at the end of this version Bruce goes wailing with his whole might, it’s enough to make the whole heavens shake. No one, in the whole history of the world had ever before made a sound like that. NO one! And, it still has the power to pick up and move me to my very core, Bach? Beethoven? Mozart? I have heard them all. But, the single most potentiality moving piece of music that I have ever heard is still this version of ‘Backstreets’.

Bruce Springsteen is a poet, pure and simple. That he knows how to string music along behind his words simply demonstrates that he has been touched by the gods!
