Beautiful song from one of his best albums ' Humans' released 1980, its an affirmation of faith in the darkness , of waiting for God in the heart of loss and uncertainty. Its a very mysterious song and could have several meanings. I am not a religious person but find this song moving and spiritually uplifting.

Here's what Bruce Cockburn has to say about the song and album -

Circa 1981 - Commenting on the background of the songs on Humans:

"It's been a heavy year personally. I was on tour in Italy and Japan and Canada, and travelling like that is always very intense. On top of that, my wife and I separated. Two of the songs, How I Spent My Fall Vacation and Tokyo, are basically impressions of my travels. Three songs - You Get Bigger as You Go, What About the Bond and Fascist Architecture - deal specifically with the separation. But I think enough people go through stuff like that, so the songs have a fairly universal application. The whole album deals with a lot of pain and death - a lot of the ugliness that I've encountered around me. But I hope it comes across that even in the face of it, there's still ground for hope. Songs like Rumours of Glory and The Rose Above the Sky are about moving from downness into something that opens up, although what that something is is not really spelled out."

[....he continues, later in the interview....]

"A lot of the songs on Humans came out of my realization that I needed other people," he says, smiling. "I've always been a loner and kept a distance between myself and even those I've regarded as friends. But all of a sudden when I was getting kicked around and battered, all these people were right there - they came through in a way I never would have expected."

*Bruce Cockburn - The Rose Above The Sky*Something jeweled slips awayRound the next bend with a splashLaughing at the hands I hold outOnly air within their graspAll you can do is praise the razorFor the fineness of the slash'Til the Rose above the skyOpensAnd the light behind the sunTakes allGutless arrogance and rageBurn apart the best of triesYou carry the weight of inherited sorrowFrom your first day till you dieToward that hilltop where the roadForever becomes one with the sky'Til the Rose above the skyOpensAnd the light behind the sunTakes allOzone on the midnight windGot me thinking of the seaAnd the mercies of the currents that broughtMe to you and you to meAnd in the silence at the heart of thingsWhere all true meetings come to be'Til the Rose above the skyOpensAnd the light behind the sunTakes all +Bruce Cockburn 1979

This song gets to me....exquisitely melancholy and transcendent at the same time '....and the mercies of the current that brought me to you and you to me...' sigh.....

@BebingtonGirl Yes, I was playing guitar back then, but electric, and heavy on the fuzz. So it just blew me away watching BC fingerpick an acoustic with such melodic skill. He really could play. BTW, beautiful photos in your post. :)

In the mid-1970s Bruce Cockburn lived near Smith Falls, Ontario - in a slightly restored pioneer log cabin. I was a teenager, but included in a carload of folks from a nearby city invited in for a few drinks and tokes - and amazingly - several performances of his songs, including one that had the words Yankee Gunboat in the chorus, I think. This was before he made it big nationally, but shows he was political from the beginning. BTW, always liked his simpler songs of just voice and guitar.

Anybody who likes this should definitely buy the album, Humans. One of my favorites and one of Cockburn's best.

Me again. Just love this, Sue. Thought I would come over again for a listen. I do love Bruce and thank you for posting this Canadian artist, offering him another chance to be heard. I agree that the messages in his songs on issues etc are important and I love that this inspires him creates music for us, and that it also creates dialogue between us in dealing with them. At a very young age you were into the political scene in another country. Now I wonder, what is in your water? :-) LOVE, min x
