(5 years ago)This is such a great tune, and this version should only be listened to between sunset and sunrise.I am continually amazed at how Dr. John, and Willie Nelson, continue to revisit and reinterpret the American Songbook.R.I.P. Odetta (who spanned several genres, and whom the music industry never really figured out what to do with).

Wonderful tune, and sad to say it will probably forever be appropriate to the times

They used to tell me I was building a dreamAnd so I followed the mobWhen there was earth to plow or guns to bearI was always there, right on the jobThey used to tell me I was building a dreamWith peace and glory aheadWhy should I be standing in lineJust waiting for bread?Once I built a railroad, I made it runMade it race against timeOnce I built a railroad, now it's doneBrother, can you spare a dime?Once I built a tower up to the sunBrick and rivet and limeOnce I built a tower, now it's doneBrother, can you spare a dime?Once in khaki suits, gee, we looked swellFull of that Yankee Doodly DumHalf a million boots went slogging through HellAnd I was the kid with the drumSay, don't you remember? They called me 'Al'It was 'Al' all the timeWhy don't you remember? I'm your palSay buddy, can you spare a dime?Once in khaki suits, ah, gee, we looked swellFull of that Yankee Doodly DumHalf a million boots went slogging through HellAnd I was the kid with the drumOh, say, don't you remember? They called me 'Al'It was 'Al' all the timeSay, don't you remember? I'm your palBuddy, can you spare a dime?Read more: Bing Crosby - Brother Can You Spare A Dime Lyrics | MetroLyrics

Hey, can anyone inform me as to the origin of this song? Who wrote it and the era circumstances under which it was written? Did any misfortune happen to the songwriter after writing the song? I can't seem to find a shred of information on this classic.

Whirli Placebo: "as compared to the upbeat original versions of the 30's." there can only one original version; in this case it was in the 1932 musical American. I wasn't there, but find it hard to imagine an upbeat version was offered.

Brother Can You Spare a Dime was originally written during the depression (1931) by Yip Harburg, who was later blacklisted during the McCathy era. It seems particularly appropriate during this time when the Republicans threaten the poor with hunger and starvation. Here is Odetta and Dr. John's interpretation of this iconic song. Please share with others.

I could be wrong (I often am), but I don't believe Boz ever recorded this one. There is a song called "Loan Me a Dime" on his 2nd album, "Boz Scaggs," from, yes, 1969 (with Duane Allman!). (His 1st album, from '65, was also self-titled: "Boz" -- confusing.) But that's a totally different song, written by Fenton Robinson, 1st recorded by him in '67. You're absolutely right that it's a phenomenal track. It's right here at YT in both album form, and at least one live version, all awesome.

O God, how can you listen to this without losing it? Thank you -- this is gorgeous, as well as heartstopping. And needed now more than ever. But about the politics -- Those of you who've been voting for and/or supporting the Republicans, I humbly and respectfully beg that you consider the possibility that you are being lied to, and used. They told you Romney was going to win... by a landslide. If they'll lie about something as obvious as that, what else have they been lying about, hm?

We're in such a hurry to put down communism and socialism that we often forget the problems capitalism causes. Capitalism is responsible for the much of the wealth of this country, but it shits on the lower classes.

According to Rush Limbaugh and Grover Norquist NEITHER of WHOM are elected officials. They are liars, and keep their distance from poor people, or blame them for their own crushing predicament.
