Mad Dog and the Pups were an R&B group on the Magic City label out of Detroit. There's not a lot of information about them and I could not find a picture. I did however find a pic of one time member Oliver Cheatham who went on to a successful solo career.

They appeared on Soul Train and performed this song which was the B side to "Funkey Money."

There other hits include "Hep Squeeze" "Love Shop" and a few others.

I loved them and this is my favorite song.

Mad Dog and the Pups were interviewed by Motown - Berry Gordy, but his manager Mr. Ernest Burt would not allow release of group. Mad dog, whose legal name is Rodney Jones is an ordained minister living in Las Vegas Neveda,; Kevin Manning lives in California; James Ferguson lives in Michigan- Detroit, and Federick ''Ferguson, James' brother is deceased. Thank God, the group did not enter the music industry!.

Just to clear up the confusion with Oliver Cheatham....He was in the group "The Young Sirs" also on Magic City Records. That group turned into "Gaslight", disbanded and Oliver went solo.

Nzinga has the most accurate story of this group. (You too Bob P) They were local heroes in early Detroit music history because they were recording. I believe Hip Squeeze was the biggest record. Oliver Cheatham was not in the group, and they never did Soul Train. Magic City Records did have a pretty good stable of artists but business practices the owners death led to it's demise. I am honored to have grown up in Detroit during this time and groups like this gave me my inspiration to move forward in the business!

I went to Longfellow elementary in Detroit off of Davidson & 12th(Buena Vista) with Rodney Jones , and his sister Robbie was in my class, (I had a crush on her, I was only 10 or 11 at the time, and she beat me up, and I loved it! Lol , and her brother Rodney and I were good friends , we use to shoot the green peas in the lunch room with the forks!. Wow ,I remember we had the talent show at school along with other friends such as Dino Jackson and many more.......that's when we all heard Rodney sing and perform for the first time! you got questions ,well I got answers! I was also the paper boy for the Temptations on LaSalle & Clements st .and Florence Ballard was off of Dexter and Buena Vista! Old Motown! Motor City! I knew all the Black Panthers and ate breakfast with them during there breakfast program while going to school in the morning. (Central High school 72-74)

I am not in touch with the group any longer. My Cousin, Rodney Jones, Mad Dog, is still living. Unfortunately, i had no photo's of him. Thanks for asking, however.

@serta Oliver Cheatham was not in the group, Mad Dog and the Pups. There was Rodney Jones, my cousin, Frederick, Kevin Manning, and Frederick's younger brother James.

Mad Dog and the Pups were never on Soul Train. But Motown wanted them more than the Jackson 5. Bad Management wanted to keep the attached to him, and denied their branching out.

@PhuckHue2 Mr. Burt, the owner of Magic City, was a crook, and took advantage of my cousin, Rodney Jones, Mad Dog. of Mad Dog and the Pups. They got dry fucked under his leadership. That's what happened. The results were tragic. Tricked them into signing a contract that would like them in indefinitely. Parents from south, knew nothing about music industry. Mr. Burt died brutally. Someone shot him, and other torturous things to him. Evil man. But he got his just due.
