Yep. At least an idol. At least not tone deaf. Yes, thank you. I like the sound of that. "Guitar God". I must be. You said so. Here we go again. Why do I reply to this stuff?

you must be a guitar god

Sure. All true. I never said that Brian wasn't a master guitarist. He's really among the top of the crowd. I merely stated my personal opinion that the man is best suited for a particular genre. Experimentation is needed to advance in any field of endeavor. And goofs are forgivable. When those goofs aren't recognized as such, or they receive undue acclaim from hysterical admirers, they can pull you in the wrong direction. Constructive criticism is all it is. Peace...

I gotta hope Levi has left the country. Well, here goes: If I were Brian Setzer, and watched a replay of this "performance" I would be mortified. He doesn't rate any "Big Band" backup. He acts like a manic and overwhelmed guitarist magically whisked away from his fantastic Rockabilly Three Piece into a forum from Hell. He's in a bad dream with no escape. I watch this and feel sorry for the guy. He strayed too far from his roots, and for some, it just doesn't work.

I've seen Brian Setzer Orchestra in concert twice, and Stray Cats once. This is the only performer who ever left me with my hands bruised from clapping.

The piece is originally by Rimsky- Korsakov. Indeed for piano. and favored by guitar players for the improvement of speed technique. :)

Thanks for giving Eric Clapton some intellectual critique; the hysteria over Brian Setzer blew me off this site for awhile. I agree that Eric is a blues virtuoso, and that possibly his lack of flamboyance is mistaken for a shortcoming in his ability. Your comment on Chet and Les was also well taken and food for thought. I really can't help but think of Rockabilly when I hear Setzer do any genre. Almost like he belongs there.

And as a blues guitarist he certainly is a virtuoso, recognized by the greatest living blues legends, B. B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy and others. Clapton has never been flamboyant, even when he was with Cream. He just stood there playing solos that blew your mind. And most of them completely improvised. That's what makes him amazing. Granted, he's not the most technical musician, but his phrasing and style has affected millions of guitarists for 3 generations.

Like all good musicians, Setzer learned his licks from those before him, then made them his own. Sorry, guys, but B.S. wasn't the first one to marry rockabilly and jazz. That would be Chet Atkins or Les Paul. As much as I like Setzer, most of his licks are variations on major chord arpeggios, inverted chord positions, and using standard passing tones. He's also big on chord substitution, which is very jazz oriented. As for Clapton, Erick chose the blues as the form he wanted to perfect.

I accidentally had "Youtube Comment Improver" turned off for this comment thread and now my day is ruined.

I don't remember who played this on piano, I remember hearing it and choking and then trying to play it and failing... I grew up around numerous guitar players - my dad, Siegel/Schwall, blah blah blah... everyone has their own "style". Knocking style is pathetic from people who are supposed to be grownups. OPINION is one thing, ABILITY to do the same or better is another. This is probably my least favorite thing I have heard Setzer ever do.

I concur, Setzer puts many of the so called guitar greats to shame.

Well thanks. These people seem to think Brian walks on water. Setzer Hysteria. I think he's a great player whose specialty is Rockabilly, which I enjoy. Watching him try "Bumblebee" was an embarrassment. I miss the old three piece Cats; a few unpretentious guys who could rock the house. Is the atmosphere out here always so poisonous? It's almost hate mail. They start typing out a rant reply before they finish reading the comment. Crazy...

I thought I had seen everything when I saw Urbie Green play this on trombone, but wow... Brian Setzer is my guitar idol. I'm going to practice my butt off everyday until I'm as good as him, no matter how many years it takes.

That's the thing Levi. I have listened. And yeah, the boy can play. But for my own tastes, it's his Rockabilly prowess that I enjoy best. When he does Big Band or other venues, it seems to me he's stepped out of his true genre. For me anyway, Rockabilly and Brian are synonymous I guess. Clapton doesn't seem to be a "natural" player, but I think Brian probably is. That's why I say that Eric has to work at it. It also appears that Setzer gets more enjoyment from his efforts. Who knows?
