I thought I'd upload something a little different this time. Brian Bennett was the drummer with The Shadows, but went his own way and composed lots of theme music for TV and film. In 1974 he came up with this one, which always seemed to go down very well at the soul discos that I ran.

In 1980 it was taken on by the BBC as their theme for all of the major golf tournaments shown on television, and was used for over twenty years.

I took all of the photos myself when I was doing a lot of golf photography back in the eighties and early nineties. Don't some of those guys look exceedingly young back then!

Another of Brian's creations is a track known as Holy Mackerel. If you remember the theme tune to BBC 2's Rugby Special on Sunday afternoons.

I'm sure the BBC started using this tune for their Golf programmes long before 1980. This version is far better than the one they use now.

Brian Bennett's best known tune, I used to watch the golf on BBC tv as well when I was younger, thanks for posting this crystal-clear copy. CSSU was issued on one of the 'North of Watford' compilation CDs from the '90s but the audio quality of that track is a bit compromised. Enjoy!

Nice to hear a pin-sharp version of this. For years the golf seemed to be accompanied by a version of this track that sounded like it had been recorded off Atlantic 252.

Check out a track called 'French Dressing' that Brian wrote in the 60's Shadows era, it's a nice one to play along to!

May I recommend the book 'An Essential Guide To Music In The 1970s' by Johnny Zero. The author is a big fan of this fine instrumental.
