@Lisa2068 fair enough, however equipment always lets you down, always. my point being that it is not one persons fault. everyone on tour does their best night after night after night despite the detrimental affect on ones health and family life

It took him so long to realize the problem because it was the speakers for the audience that stopped producing sound (the speakers themselves were fine; there was an electrical issue). So even though the audience heard nothing, the mix that he has in his monitors (which also act as earplugs) still sounds very, very similar to the way they normally would.
