Bon will always manage to captivate this song, but then again Birdy has her magic as well. Their versions stand isolated from each other and it's as easy for any ear to hear. He sings about the bitterness and anger of a love broken, while she sings of the distress and heartbreak. Two different views to the same subject. I can't really see any reason to compare, they both really are beautiful and near impossible to say which is better.

Birdy is a kid singing a song about loss who can't possibly fathom the depths of the meaning she sings because to do so means she would need to make herself so woefully and wonderfully vulnerable as to love someone more than she loves herself. Given the fact her video is a close up of her face as she opines wistfully, the superficiality of the act undercuts any sincerity of what's said and why. To those who've loved wonderfully and lost woefully, this song is more than a catchy tune and clever turn of phrase. It's what is lost in the longing, and what was never said in what was spoken because it was communicated in more than words. It's not a loss you shake off. It's a loss worn. In some cases, as Bon said, for ever more.

I'm normally very okay with covers--I mean, look at Hurt, how great Johnny Cash did with that one. But when a song is THIS passionate and THIS beautiful, and people have the audacity to say Birdy's is better, it kind of disturbs me. Just watching Bon Iver perform nearly brings tears to my eyes
