Haunting song from Gentry yet beautiful. I just read this morn - from the New York Daily* a woman jump in the icy river in Brooklyn.. don't hav details. The GWB {bridge} seems the jump off' to end your life... So damn sad. Make's me wonder 'ppl are not putting attention to little details. And there is no turning back+++

It was a bag of weed. She made him or she wouldn't go out with him. He went back later to fish it out but drowned. It was an accident. True story:) Love the song.

I think people should make more fun of her eye makeup than the song. I'm pretty sure she's wearing what was called a 'fall" back in those days - a hairpiece, folks. That eyeliner and fake lashes have come around again! Never fails. Same thing with hair pieces (these days they're hair extensions). I'm just grateful the polyester double-pocket pant suit hasn't come back in style. :D

You have to remember the era of this song (1960's, very folksy and in this case "country". Don't like country music? It was still a good song and she had a good voice. IMHO.

This song and bobbie gentry are genious! I remember al lthe speculation it caused on tv for years... only a brilliant writer could do that! I was about 7 at the time and I remember it! and we never lived in the south! it was all over the tv, and radio.

I'm for throwing the 26 people who dislike this off the Tallahatchee Bridge.

There are two options as to what was being thrown from the Talahachi bridge. One (the more tasteful of the two options) is that it was an engagement ring...The other (much more disturbing and therefore highly likely given the general tone of the song) is that it was a newborn child.Only person who knows for sure is Bobby, and she withdrew from public life completely, even her friends and relatives don't know where she is, so the legend goes.

You dummy... this song is absolutely brilliant and thought provoking...perhaps thats why rolling stone placed it in the top 500 best recorded songs ever. Ode to billie joe and gentrys song fancy, are ranked in the 40s #42 and #47, I think

A live performance with no auto tune was rare for this period. Only real talent dared do it.

This song is written much like a traditional British ballad in that what is not said is the crux of understanding it. Like the traditional ballad, there is a darker, unknown element that is disconcerting. There is no definitive answer to what happened and why. Even Bobbie Gentry doesn't know what was thrown off the bridge. The movie is just a screenwriter's interpretation.

Really, WC1... and what do you play...?The other compositions you mention are fine, too.But this Bobby Gentry tune is a great song in the Key of D Major in 4/4 with tempo Moderato = 112bpm, 2-step shuffle walk at 56bpm.People like what they like -- especially working people, of all backgrounds, who "get" music, up against it out in the field of challenge as they are.Money, aka, candy store tickets, follows that dynamic in the music business -- hence, rap and hip-hop critics don't get the soundphysics and absolute accuracy and insight of that sound expression, for instance... just as those same critics would never get the actual feeling and substance behind Mozart's '15th Sonata in C'... with segue into 'Same Old Blues.'Music is the expression of the human and life condition in soundphysics.
