Bobbie Gentry sings Thunder in the Afternoon

This song was released on a 1992 Curb Records Bobbie Gentry Greatest Hits compilation titled Ode to Billie Joe. This song was never released in the US.

My guess is that it was recorded when she was under contract for Warner Bros. records, roughly the time that she re-recorded Ode to Billie Joe for the film version (1976) - making this and the songs mentioned below her last studio recordings. She appears to have recorded at least 6 songs for Warner Bros. (Ode to Billie Joe, Slow Cookin', Steal Away, Sweet Country, Thunder in the Afternoon and He Did Me Wrong But He Did it Right)

They didn't know how to promote this song in the states because it wasn't her country sound. But still a good damm song.

I really haven't heard that many of her songs and wasn't expecting a sound like this. I really like the music.

This sounds like a modern piece on soundcloud.

I remember Bobbie Gentry when I was little! I can just hear her music on the radio still, playing in the car as we drove to visit my grandparent's place in Toronto back in the 60's! I loved her stuff back then, and to hear it again brings back so many great memories for me! I'd forgotten though, how pretty she was! Just gorgeous! She was quite an inspiration for me back then! I remember her interview on the radio, as she talked about the Movie "Ode to Billy Joe", just before it came out.

Without a doubt one of the best American female vocalists & songwriters -- along with Jackie de Shannon. The hits were great but little lost tracks like this are real finds. "Mississippi Delta" still gives me shivers & that was a flipside. Reba keeps Bobbie upfront with first class covers of Ms. Gentry's "Fancy." I respect Bobbie's decision to not record & perform anymore -- but she really should continue to write songs. Country music could use Bobbie Gentry.
