they made a movie about this in the 70s-I think it was 76 or 77. It stared Robbie Benson and was directed by Max "Jethro Bodene" Baer.

July 27, 1944 - Roberta Streeter--a.k.a. Bobbie Gentry--is born in Chickasaw, Mississippi. She wins three Grammys in 1968, including Best New Artist, on the heels of her suspenseful hit "Ode To Billie Joe." Gentry's song "Fancy" later becomes a hit for Reba McEntire. Happy Birthday Bobbie!

I remember when I was around 6 years old, I heard this song and realized that Billie Joe Mcallister jumped off the Tallahachee bridge on my birthday and for months I was terrified or very sad at this public proof that nothing good ever happened on the third of June. Now decades later, I realize how sad the lives of all of the people in this song are, not just Billie Joe. No wonder it hit me so hard.

I've heard that Billie Joe had gotten drunk and had a homosexual encounter and the whole town found out about and he then committed suicide

Every June 3rd I make my pilgrimage to this mysterious , haunting , seductive and fine song ! Scheherazade has nothing on her and couldn't be more beautiful and so sultry , steamy , radiant , white hot , blasting fountains of lava and I'm in junior high school again and filled with wonder ! Thank You Bobbie Gentry !!!!!!!!!
