BLUES FOR BABY AND ME

Elton John

Don't Shoot Me (I'm Only The Piano Player) (1973)

Your old man got mad when I told him we were leaving

He cursed and he raged and he swore at the ceiling

He called you his child, said honey get wise to his game

He'll get you in trouble I know it, those bums are all the same

There's a greyhound outside in the lane, it's waiting for us

So tell him goodbye, we gotta go west on that bus

And it's all over now

Don't you worry no more

Gonna go west to the sea

The greyhound is swaying

And the radio is playing

Some blues for baby and me

And the highway looks like it never did

Lord it looks so sweet and so free

And I can't forget that trip to the west

Singing blues for baby and me

Saw your hands trembling, your eyes opened in surprise

It's ninety in the shade babe, and there ain't a cloud in the sky

I called you my child, said honey now this is our game

There's two of us to play it and I'm happy to be home again

There's a greyhound outside in the lane, it's waiting for us

So tell him goodbye, we gotta go west on that bus

Sometimes hearing this song reminds me I've so long in one place, too long in one place, for a gypsy soul.

My brother used to play this album all of the time back in the day and now I have it on CD and Elton will always be one of my favorite musicians as well! Have always liked this song and it is very underrated.

And this... blues for Alpha, Beta and me...

Horribly underrrated song/ recording. As Elton does his usual outstanding percussion-piano, Nigel Olsson puts on a drumming clinic here while Davey Johnstone and Paul Buckmaster were more than ready for the challenge.

Is it just me or does the intro sound just like the riff from "Alone again or" by Love?

When my newborn baby girl was fussy at 2:00 a.m., I would put this song on and dance with her on my shoulder until she fell asleep. Hard to put the feelings into words when I hear this 22 years later......

My first, and still one of the best, Elton John albums that i bought. Heard it at a mates house, and saved up to buy it. Great memories....there isn't a bad track on it.

wore this 8 track out when I was 12 years old...still remember the KLICK KA KLICK as it changed channels during the best part of this song....looking back, damn I had great taste in music

Love the lyrics by Taupin here. Really strong imagery and tells a very good story. And Elton's melody complements the lyrics really well.

Always thought this album was tragically overshadowed by "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road "

I wore this album out to. Parents had a big console stereo and I spent hours listening to this album. Headphones always. I like the production of Gus Dudgeon it sounds so good. To me this is strong elton, not an expert though. I really like Nigel Olsen's drum work on this too. Probably stands out more than anything to me.
