In this clip you will see one of the best old timey scenes ever filmed. It is part of my two hour program, Making Documentaries, which has been helpful to thousands of budding videographers, filmmakers, moviemakers, storytellers. I was a very young filmmaker when I made it and learned a lot about editing in this process. I tell all in my program which can be found at my website, www.theHoffmancollection.com

These people made their own fun, we live in New Zealand and people here did the same thing back then it was common. Community dances were held in our war memorial halls but now are no longer prevalent, however you can still go dancing and other stuff but the Internet and television has made this type socialising redundant.

You're the guy, Doug. You're the guy who do a left-to-right pan of the dancers at their eye level, and went right over the head of the little cutie in the dress. You owe her face time. Good film. Saw the whole dance on another video.

We used to dance like this in the front room and outside on the front porch. Had a huge old upright piano my mother played gospels on. Seems like everyone played some kind of instrument back then. We never had the shoes. So we stomped the floors harder bare feet. ...lol

Mr. Hoffman ,I recently had the great pleasure of watching both your clips from 64. And away over here in England,51 years on, I was wriggling in my chair just wanting to be apart of what I was watching and listening to. And you know, I too fell in love with the Bobbed hair girl.....as the sheer joy seen in her face was so uplifting. In truth I enjoyed watching them all immensely ! Thank you so much for sharing them. Truly and greatly appreciated !!

David, what happened to our bobbed hair girl? She'd be 64 years old now? Have you ever done any follow up in the same spot? How're you doing? Doug

If you like old time blue grass music or clog dancing from the hills of Appalachia in North Carolina, this is a great documentary! If you want to see a short video the dancing and a fantastic song by a modern folk singer, there are links there and I loved seeing that too.

Some of the dancing is similar to Scottish dancing and in the past we had clog dancing in Scotland but it got lost when the rich land owners cleared the highlands of people to graze sheep. Our loss your gain. I play folk music up in the mountains of The Cairngorms and I've just bought a Denis Siler dulcimer which was originally made for a Mrs Dorothy Gatterman. I hope to let people in Scotland find a connection through playing the mountain dulcimer. Thank you for the film

Thank you so much. I'm an author who's scared of herself and that video makes me think... If those people, in a rather hard time, had the time & heart to pass such magnificent music and dancing on to us, how in the world do I have the right to not write a good book? Thanks :)

Mr. Hoffman, thank you for recording these valuable vignettes of Americana. I am truly grateful. But why do you title so many of your clips "bluegrass dancing," "bluegrass music," etc.? None of this is bluegrass, and as a documentarian, you ought to be aware of that. Bluegrass was considered a radical new style of "slick" country music popularized by Bill Monroe and others that was as shocking to old-time country music fans in 1948 as Elvis Presley was to mainstream listeners a decade later. I'd say what you've done is much more important, because you've captured relics of authentic Celtic-Anglic folk traditions and American (white) gospel that led to modern bluegrass and eventually to the "Nashville sound."
