I loved this movie, except for the always irritating presence of jose ferrer! he has spoiled so many otherwise good movies for me! "Ship of Fools" being a prime example!

I had heard that Jo Ann Greer dubbed Ms. Hayworth for this film.  Then, today at a thrift store found a 78rpm (on the Mercury record label) of this song (BLUE PACIFIC BLUES) and THE HEAT IS ON.  For this side, the label states VOCAL BY RITA HAYWORTH; on the flip side for THE HEAT IS ON, the same vocal credit appears, but it has been gone over with a black marker, or black grease pencil.  I thought perhaps that the "blacking out" of Rita Hayworth's name may have been done by Mercury due to a possible printing error.  The voice sounds the same on both sides of the recording, and the voice from BLUE PACIFIC BLUES matches what is in this video.  Normally, when someone has been dubbed, the most a label will have is the character's name, like PACIFIC BLUES - Sadie... I just thought it was curious that, in this case, the actor who DIDN'T sing the number was given vocal credit.

In the previous films, in 1928 and 1932, Sadie Thompson was a washed-up prostitute. But in the 1950s, censorship was actually stricter than in those early days. So they made her a saloon singer, and a good one. Critics hated this watered-down version, but Somerset Maugham, who created the character of Sadie, liked Rita Hayworth in the part. Maybe that was because she was starting to show her age (though still beautiful). Gloria Swanson and Joan Crawford looked too fresh-faced in the role.
