I heard this at a dance show and it's been stuck in my head ever since, I must have listened to it more than 100 times these last days.

There is, by the way, no such thing as an atheist. God has revealed His divine nature and eternal power through creation. Also men (and women) are without excuse. God wants to be acknowledged as such and thanked for what He has provided.

First heard this sung by Jean Ritchie, in 1977 on her album None But One. Brilliant. Glad she was here with us; she left today.

I love this tune, and have figured out a dulcimer arrangement after hearing this version, so I can finally add it to the mix. =DThis tune is #252 in the Southern Harmony, and #432 in the Methodist Hymnal.Does anyone know if Blue Highway are singing the SH harmonization or the newer Carlton Young harmony? For those who like the melody of the song, but can't relate to the Christian message, there is a version in the UU "Singing the Living Tradition" hymnal, hymn #18, with new words by Connie Campbell Hart that relate an inspiring message about the value of friendship in times of sorrow.  While I generally like to keep the words and message of folk hymns intact when playing them, in this particular instance I find Hart's lyric to be more compelling and powerful.  Of course, I understand that many would resent secular words used with a traditional Christian Hymn, but for those who are more interested in the melody than in the message, there are alternative lyrics available.

There is an episode of "The Cosby Show" in which Claire sings one verse of this song, giving it the Black gospel feeling.  That was the first time I ever heard the song and I've loved it since.  I wish there was a recording of her singing the whole thing.

I am a Christian but I dont have any desire to push my beliefs on anyone. If your an atheist or whatever you choose to believe in or not believe in is fine to, but why do people feel the need to make something that works for them for someone else as well?

Why do these militant atheists feel the need to go around spreading the non-news?  Just shut up and listen to the song if you're not religious, then.  Leave the believers be - there's nothing to add.
