For French and I suppose for many others, a Standard of Django Reinhardt et le Quintette du Hot Club de France "Hot Club de France"... ...Freddy Taylor was a black tap dancer, singer, trumpeter and entertainer, who had come to Paris with the Lucky Millinder orchestra during the band's 1933 tour of Europe. Taylor stayed in Paris and soon formed his own band, which he named Freddy Taylor & His Swing Men From Harlem. At the same time Taylor was running his own club at Montmartre and often left the band on its own while he worked as a soloist throughout the Continent. In Paris Taylor recorded as a vocalist with Django Reinhardt and the QHCF in 1936 - these sides belong to his most well known, scholars of the QHCF recorded legacy probably will mention "Nagasaki" and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby" both recorded 1936. However, Freddy Taylor also recorded with his own group, the Swing Men From Harlem. Two sides recorded in March 1935 with Freddy Taylor (dir,vo,tp), Charlie Johnson (tp), Arthur "Chester" Lanier (cl, as, bars), Fletcher Allen (cl, ts), Oscar Alemán (g), Eugène d'Hellemmes (b), William Diemer (dm), contain "Blue Drag" and " Viper's Dream", released on a 78 rpm disc by the Ultraphone label.

You can make any claim you like but there is no Django playing on this recording because he WOULD have had a solo if he was, and it is deceitful to have so many pictures of him here.It is a great song though. YOu didn't need to mention Django.

Addictive is the appropriate word for this great piece. Freddy Taylor rules!

Hm, odd.  I have this exact song on a 78 with "Crazy Rhythm" on the flip side.  That one's credited to Freddy Taylor with the Quintette du Hot Club de France.  It's on the Royale label instead of Ultraphone too.

This is like a mantra to me. I've played it 200 times, driving my girl friend crazy!!! I wish there was more Freddy on Youtube. He had to be great to play w/ Django. This and Georgia are my faves. There is something hypnotic about this song, especially the muted trumpets. Many thanks!

Hey I've been looking for info about Freddy Taylor for ages. He was such an amazing singer, surely one of the greatest jazz vocalists ever and such a shame that he is mostly now forgotten, except for the couple of records remaining with his Swing Men and Django. Do a search for "Django Reinhardt Three Fingered Lightning", skip to 35.01 and have a look at a photo with Freddy Taylor and Django. Best pic I've seen. Cheers for posting this lovely record and info!

How wonderful to find this Erica! Freddy's wife, Ann Taylor, was one of my best friends. She shared so many stories with me about their romance and life together. Ann passed away before I could record all her stories. I am committed to making a film or bringing their story to the theater. I found this today from conducting research. Please contact me if you have any other material or info concerning Freddy. Thank you, and have a great day! ~Valerie
