This guy had a hell of a voice. I watched a Duke of Earl performance first, and then found some others by him just now. The Doo-Wop music sort of died out prematurely in my opinion. A new Generation came of age in '64, and things changed rapidly. Radio stations responded to the huge new generation quickly, and these great artists were put on the back burner. It's funny though, even as early as 1969, you had bands like Sha-Na-Na playing 'oldies' like this to sold out shows, when some of the music was only 6 years old! It shows just how badly many people missed what had gone away.

This is one of the most beautiful ballads I have ever heard! The only other ballad I would compare in beauty and measures up to this song fully is Jimmy Beaumont(The Skyliners) in the recording THIS I SWEAR from 1959. Yes! Its CLEAN and PURE and BEAUTIFUL. Thats the way they did it in the 1950's and 60's. THANK for this post!

Gene Chandler was one of those outrageously talented vocalists whose showmanship added to the 'meat and potatoes' aspect of his tenor voice. He along with Otis Redding, James Brown, Tommy Hunt, et al. were the sine qua non of vocalists. His six months spent in prison awakened him from the unreality that cocaine brings to those of us who dabbled in that lifestyle.
