he's dedicated this song to stevie and his wife, speculate as you will. but I've seen the interview of him stating he wrote it for his new wife. He explained how he thought he loved stevie, and then realized what real love was. Everyone can go on believing the magical fairy tale of their forever love. He is over it and has been.
