...in response to Caleb Wilson:...the only natural and sensible way to 'flat-pick' it on guitar is, duh ! ...clamp up two frets, and play in G formation !!

I'm only 15, learning how to play the mandolin, so i do not have that much experience, but from my point of view i think it sounds perfect where it is.

Good job Roland - I've enjoyed your fine mandolin playing over the years. Great tune, great arrangements. I've always played it in either open A or regular tuning on fiddle and in A key. But I know some who play in other keys. Some of us lesser musicians stick to the A but you show us how to take an great old tune and play in another key. Good job! Bob Jones, Canada

Get your guitarist friend to do the transposing. In A, he'd be playing an A, D, and E progression. I don't know the song well enough to tell you the exact order, but if he fiddles around with those three chords, it should not be difficult to figure out. Hope this helps :)

Roland says further: "I also play it in D and F. When Clarence White and Doc Watson played it they capoed up two frets and played out C position, to play it in D. It was originally recorded in A by Tommy Jackson with his fiddle tuned in open A tuning. I actually tried to tune my mandolin to open A at first but I kept breaking strings."

Roland says: "I explained why I played it that way in the video. It's just a different approach."
