This song was written about the Woolworth heiress, Barbara Hutton. Her father was E. F. Hutton, her grandfather was Frank Woolworth, owner of all the Woolworth Stores. She was referred to as the poor little rich girl and really did have a rather sad and lonely life. Great song.

I decided to look up this song after hearing it several times on a black and white cartoon I have on DVD. It's an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon by the Walter Lantz studio and the song's performed by Oswald and a female character. The cartoon is called "Five and Dime", released in September 1933.

genikri: Thank you so much. My memories almost parallel yours. My parents met in Woolworth's 5&10 cent store on Broad St. in Elizabeth, New Jersey about 1934. They eventually married in 1940, and I thank them for that.

I love this song. it was my Mom and Dad's "song" because they first saw each other in a 5 & 10 Cent store in Macon, Georgia... So this song is really a true story of their love. It's my mom's birthday today and I think she'd love this tribute to them!

the young kids of today amaze when me they appreciate great music in eras beyond their years Life needs to slow down to appreciate all that God has to give.

Bing is my favorite entertainer of all time, but right now I'm wondering if there was a single song written between 1920 and 1970 that he didn't cover?

Best version of this old standard I'd say.

I agree. Harry Warren wrote so many classics. His name should be more know. I like his Crying for the Carolines.

Exactly my sentiments! Al Bowlly was the finest crooner of his time and likely any time. Bing was good too - this is one of his very best. Ray Eberle with the Glenn Miller Band was tremendous too., How wonderful were these band singers - it seems we'll never see their like again.
