This song is so sweet... I can never stop listening to it... Have you ever seen him perform this live at the Night School on MTV? It was beautiful...

I don't own this song, video, or the album "The Nylon Curtain".

The Nylon Curtain is a true masterpiece by Billy Joel! This song is one that is underrated, but is a great one at that! The "Allentown" reprise at the end just does itself a great job to bookend the album!...

The point is BJ not only sings but orchestrates and leaves most other great intimate singers strumming.

I like the Allentown melody at @2:40

I like the picture accompanying this. Good job, whoever did that.

You can hear the Beatles influence. A particularly McCartney-esque tune.

Boy, this is a beautiful song, haunting, poetic and existential. It reminds me of the opening scene from Stardust Memories where Woody Allen finds himself on the train full of miserable people when he wants to be on the one with the glamorous ones. And it really sounds like it's from a Broadway show.

Because life isn't a musical.

This song hits my heart like a bullet train, I think this is Billy's saddest song, not because of the words or melody, but because of the Allentown tune.

Night school is where I found out about this song. Anyone else?

I came to this link just now after reading one of his essays. And hey, his writing is pretty funny. He's not an idiot.

I thought it was a metaphor for the disillusionment of the people of his generation faced in the early 80's, that were written about in the Nylon Curtain.

He shot down the Moody Blues in one of his books, he lost credibility with me after that.

When I was younger, I couldn't relate to this song. Now I can. Thank you for waiting.

I've never seen anybody whose deep cuts were this much better than the hits.

A fitting close to Nylon Curtain- Billy J, Experienced personal disappointments in his musical and recent break up of first wife Ellen. Rip Phil, you are not forgotten.

RIP Phil Ramone. He once said this was the song he produced that he wished more people knew, and it's always been one of my favorites as well. Unfortunately, it speaks to me.
