Singers, groups of the 1960's, 1970's & part of the 1980's hadreal talent. Since 1986 music has gone way down hill, today'smusic is junk, garbage, no talented artists. Way too much raunchy, trashy, garbage, crap ghetto gangbanger, real heavy metal noisethat needs to be thrown right in the garbage where it belongs.Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, the lateJohn Denver, late Billy Preston, Neil Diamond, Gordon Lightfoot,Olivia Newton-John, Carly Simon, James Taylor, Carole King,Kris Christopherson, Rita Coolidge all have talent, class & greatsongs.

The last of the big time spenders reminds me of going from rags to riches. The music business is s game of trying to beat each other off the charts.

However, I think Elton in many situations has displayed greater control over the pitch of his voice than Billy, and he is a rock solid pianoplayer. Probably a better left hand than Billy, too. I don't think it's wrong to compare these two, just because they are different. They have different strengths and these are quite interesting to hold up against each other. Melodywise is where Billy shines the most, and he has always been all about this aspect of song-writing.

I couldn't disagree more. I think melody is THE area where Billy shines over Elton by a large margin. Partly because he writes the music first, and that is very evident in the tunes...his melodies always feel complete and well rounded as pieces of music, very similar to McCartney's in this respect. While I think Elton may be the a more solid piano player than Billy by a hair, most of his melodies just put me to sleep, and seem squeezed onto lyrics, often a bit awkwardly/boringly so.

the whole who is better billy joel or elton john debate is inane and stupid. like elton john said, with billy joel sitting beside him in an interview comparing them is like comparing chalk and cheese. they are totally different piano players, you might as well argue that oranges taste better than bananas or vice versa.....

Anyone hear part of "The Entertainer" at 3:34? Not sure if fit was intentional, or just a weird coincidence.

Why is everyone commenting about how Billy Joel is better than Elton John?Yes,Billy is the more "complete" singer-songwriter,being that he writes the lyrics, but melody-wise I don't think anyone can compare to Elton John. The sheer complexity of his compositions is incredible. He doesn't have as emotion as Billy, but he makes better music.

actually, you are incorrect. Billy does not get "help" with the lyrics. he has written every word of every one of his songs, with the exception of Code Of Silence which he cowrote with Cyndi Lauper. Also, all musicians help artists w/arrangements, that doesn't mean they wrote the song or get a share of the songwriting. Billy writes the music and lyrics to his songs, Elton writes just the music, 50% of the song.

I do agree with you that Billy is better than Elton, but Billy doesn't write EVERYTHIGN himself; Sometimes he gets help on the lyrics (which is logical if you look at the amount of songs he's created) and he usually lets the musicians create their own arrangements of the song, so its not 100% Billy. Its rather 100% Billy and his band.

Billy is far superior to Elton. Not even close. They shouldn't be compare. Elton ONLY writes music. No lyrics. Billy writes music and lyrics so the musical expression that you hear is 100% from Billy. from elton it's only 50%. He can't write a lyric if his life depended on it. Billy's lyrics are real, blue collar. The real deal. This song is amazing. This is an underrated album. also on it is the Great Suburban Showdown and The Entertainer. Awesome!

Amazing for an artist that you can find a monster of a song like this one buried in their B-sides. I have a feeling if this song was on one of his later albums, it would have been a huge hit for him. It has a country-ish tinge to it which doesn't detract at all from Billy's recognizable piano sound. Also the earnestness in his voice really shines here.

How did this not make his greatest hits CD? Correction: How did ALL of his songs not make it to his greatest hits CD? Long Live Billy

This song reminds me of something that would be emanating from the juke box of a southwestern bar, out in the middle of nowhere in America. Especially with the slide guitar section at 2:23. Beautiful.

This song should have been a hit. Such raw emotions... ranks right up there with the BEST piano rock of all time. IMO, I think Billy's music best's Elton John's in the sense that it's more personal, being that he writes his own lyrics AND music. I like Elton and all, but BIlly is a step above in my opinion.

Out of every album, this song's in my top 5 (Who can really pick a single favorite anyway?), easily the most under appreciated in my opinion.
