Billy can integrate clever modulation and jazz harmony into a pop song like nobody else, I swear. It's not as melodically focused as prog, but you can't say there isn't a hell lot of genius in the harmony.Let's see. Whole bunch of jazzy 7 chords throughout the song. Verses are in A major, Prechorus is in D major to E minor, Chorus is in E minor, then he resolves back to the A major at the beginning of the next verse with a tritone sub (Bb9-5)... then the funky bridge is that same cadence, only with some crazy Hendrix chords: A7+9 to Bb7+9, back and forth... then Eaug back to A (I think the only other time I've heard people use that cadence was with the Beatles, of course, one of Billy Joel's big influences.)And then, you know, during the guitar solo, it gets really crazy. Shifts up from the Bb7+9 by a minor third to C#7+9 for a while, then C9+11, B9, Bb7+9—chromatic progression back down to A9 for the final part of the song.

My least favorite Billy Joel song. How it ended up being the title track of this album is beyond me.

I think "Downeaster Alexa" is a little more appropriate sound for the cover. Still an awesome song.

I love thunderstorms. I always thought about this song when watching them, but it never occurred to me to play it. Going to do that this summer when the storms approach.

There were many times when my friends and I headed out into North Easters on Lake Erie... just to ride the storms waves for fun! Fearless in 'whitewater'.
