For some folks, Billie's voice is difficult to understand. Her vocal sound is unconventional and not exactly pleasing and the nuances of jazz singing--in her case highly unconventional--are for some an acquired taste. When I was 12 years old, many, many years ago, I somehow found a 78 RPM (verve) of her singing Yesterdays. I knew the song already because my mother played it on the piano and sang along to her playing, so Billie's vocalization was quite mysterious. I noticed that she did not sing even one note as it was written and it was exquisite. And that's Jazz!
