As a little thank you to all who have subscribed and watched my videos, I have uploaded a new video expanding on my first one dedicated to Bill Stewart. The first video, to this point, (March 8th, 2013) is my most watched and commented on by far!

The first clip demonstrates a lick that he often uses in solos and trading. In order to play it cleanly, you must have a slightly tighter grip on the left stick to press the stick into the head for the non-stick shot notes. The second clip shows the lick at a slower tempo. The third involves trading 4's using the lick.

The second part of the video is a groove that Bill played on a John Scofield tune called 'Dark Blue', from his 'Hand Jive' album. It is a great groove and an awesome tune, so be sure to check it out!

In the final part, I am playing a transcription I did of Bill's solo from the John Scofield tune 'Everybody's Party', from the excellent 'I Can See Your House From Here' album. This solo definitely has some distinct Bill Stewart ideas including over-the-barline phrasing, a sharp melodic focus, and some polyrhythmic sections.

Thanks so much for your kind words and encouragement. It is truly appreciated.

Thank you very much, Justin! I hope the videos shed some light on Bill's methods. Bill has been using that lick for 20 years or more, so it is likely that Ari may have picked it up from him. The rides are lovely, but have somewhat limited applications. I'd like to try the Mark 2's. The hats are old Zildjians from the 60's or 70's. 14" Quick Beats, although the top hat may either be from another pair, or it is a crash because it is paper thin! Thanks again, Justin!

Mannn, I love your Bill Stewart videos. Super great resource for drummers. Ari Hoenig applies that same phrasing from the stick shot lick in a lot of different ways. Wonder if he got it from Bill. Man I love the way those Dry Complex's sound recorded, but I've never been a fan of them when I've played them in person. I need to re-tune my ears. What hats are those?

Thanks Brian! I'm happy you enjoyed the video. The snare is the same model that Bill Stewart uses. A Ludwig Supraphonic Hammered Bronze 6 1/2 x 14. It has a Remo Ambassador batter head tuned quite tight and the resonant head is the one that came with the drum, tuned a bit tighter than the batter. I also do the Jeff Hamilton trick and place a small band aid underneath the batter head close to the edge to eliminate a bit of ring.

Very nicely done! Great playing and I love the sound your getting out of your drums, especially the toms. Awesome. Question: How would you describe your snare tuning? What kind of snare? Depth?
