It was bluegrass that created country music of yesterday but the country of today Idk what to call it anymore cuz it's not country. But some of the new stuff is ok. But other then that I listen to the old stuff from way b4 I was born until the 90's b/c I was born in 1975. I have great respect for Willie, Waylon, Hank Sr. Among others of that generation they made some awesome songs. I listen to all of them from that generation up to the 90's like I said above. I hate hip hop or rap what ever u wanna call it.

First off, he can sing the song any way he wants, after all he wrote it. Secondly, he has a lot of years behind him here, so I think you can accept a some intonation and timbre issues. But, he performs it clean with his band and even though I'd like a bit more vibrato in the violins and the back up voices, that is the Bluegrass style, take it or leave it. But, I find Bluegrass to be one of the most honest forms of music there is. Just good ole folks pickin and grinnin!

I saw him perform free in downtown Norfolk, VA around 1995 or so at a Bluegrass Festival there.

Not everybody can GET Bluegrass. It's a matter of taste. I absolutely detest Rap music. I know ppl who like Rap & hate Bluegrass.

March 15, 1996 - Bluegrass legend Bill Monroe makes what becomes his final appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. He ended his touring and playing career in April, following a stroke. Monroe died on September 9, 1996, in Springfield, Tennessee, only four days before his 85th birthday. Rest in peace Mr. Monroe.

Country and western music is like hip hop. It used to be better.

OMG that was terrible! Holy crap! I came here to hear the original by Bill Monroe himself. I wished I hadn't The man God rest his soul sings like Yoko Ono or as if someone's stepping on a cat repeatedly!. Check out Carson Peters and Ricky Skaggs - Blue moon of Kentucky over to the right there in the list of videos or do a search if you don't see it. SOOO much better. So's the fiddle playing! And the kid is only 10! Even the kids voice is so much kinder to the human ear.

Bill Monroe was the man! By the way, Lucixir's comment below is just plain silly. Bill Monroe defined bluegrass. He coined the word. Bill Monroe's voice will go down as one of, if not, the greatest in this genre.

I sang this at my dad's side, not long before he passed on. The pain is still so fresh. I bet he and Bill are having a time...

Rose Maddox does a GREAT cover of this song! She was hesitant to sing a bluegrass song, since she thought she didn't have the voice for bluegrass. Boy, was she wrong! Bill Monroe had to convince her, and she said the only way she'd do the song (the album) is if there was steel guitar (played by Wayne Gailey, I believe?).It just makes me sing along, and LOUDly! Lots of people criticized the album as not being true bluegrass due to the steel guitar, but whatever you want to call it, it's GOOD!
