I just spotted a comment from a while ago about Haley using playback tracks. This performance from Ed Sullivan was 100% live. Dick Clark required artists to lip-synch, so they had no choice. And the same was true for Orfeon a Go-Go and Haley also had to lip-synch for a couple of TV performances in 1979, but the Comets performed live whenever possible on TV. And regarding "stealing" other people's songs, it was common practice and before anyone throws stones, take a look at how many songs Elvis covered, and the Beatles in their early career. The songs that mattered for Haley were originals: Crazy Man Crazy (first Rock and Roll song to hit the national charts in 1953), and Rock Around the Clock was written for Haley but due to issues between his producer and the songwriters he wasn't allowed to record it until after an obscure group called Sonny Dae and His Knights put a version out. The group's Skinny Minnie (which has been covered/stolen countless times) was also an original.

Bill Haley and his Band were just real solid performers. Unfortunately, Bill did not have any sex appeal which attributed to his short reign as "King of Rock & Roll". No matter, because most of his early work is now being appreciated and considered Rock and Roll as far back as 1951. As usual, we tend to appreciate a person's contribution long after they are no longer there.

Everybody used playback tracks for a long time. Look at The Who. It wasn't for lack of ability. It was for television. The only band that comes to mind that never did was Led Zeppelin and I don't think they did very many television appearances. I think they were the first in that respect.

@OGNightElfMohawk Bill Haley is awesome, but I gotta let ya know... Bill Haley, along with MANY other rock n roll stars, did borrow and some even stole songs from other Artists. Also, Bill Haley did use playback tracks in his career. Dont wanna take anything away from Bill Haley, he is still a hell of a performer and musician, but the truth is the truth..sorry. (he lip sings in American Bandstand for example, check it out).Again,Bill Haley and the Comets still kick ass!

@Alpha7xxx Yes, back in the day, people actually had to have talent to make it, and most even wrote their own music and didn't use tape recorders to play back when they did shows... Amazing how far we've come.
