Notes:

"Come Rain Or Come Shine" is a 1946 Harold Arlen / Johnny Mercer composition.

This is the third incarnation of Bill Evans' great '60s piano trios, playing at a very high level. Chuck Israels' bass work, in particular, is nothing short of virtuosic. His playing shows the influence of Scott LaFaro -- especially in his use of counterpoint -- but he's supremely inventive.

Background:

Evans' first (and greatest) trio featured the irreplaceable Scott LaFaro on double bass and Paul Motian on drums. After LaFaro's tragic death in a car accident in 1961 (at age 25), Evans was so overcome with grief that he didn't play again publicly for almost a year. In early '62, he reformed his trio and hired Chuck Israels to replace LaFaro. Motian departed the trio in 1964, and was replaced by Larry Bunker.

If you're interested in hearing the greatest of all piano trios, here are the CDs to buy:

Just came from Scotty's version. More depth, less swing here with chuck. I dare say Scotty's untimely death made Bill who he is as we all love.

To celebrate Chuck Israels 76th ( born 10.8.36) Birthday I have chosen this clip - Bill Evans Trio - Come Rain Or Come Shine - 19 Mar 65 as it seems apt for Melbourne at the present...the introduction to the clip is not to be skipped as the host sums up Chuck's command of the double bass....I recommend the whote suite of clips...I am fascinated by the ivy-league formality of both audience and musicians ...as if Jazz was a formal event...

thank you ,I was always fond of his musical skills on trumpet, saw him once live in Soho club ,oxfordst 1oo or such in ca 1956. Ilearned his humor later. come rain come shine is one of my favorite chord progressions. Art blakeyhad taken it to Hard bop. thanks for your info.
