the sound you're trying to describe does pre-date big black; there were scenes in england and germany, and scattered punk scenes across north america. you can look up skinny puppy, foetus, throbbing gristle and einsturzende neubauten. also, ministry were nearing this sound by '86. but, you have to understand that industrial is a type of punk, and the two scenes are consequently not easily separable before about 1985.

This (they) is NOT "alternative"...it's called "punk". The term 'alternative' to describe certain music wasn't even a term until the 90's. And it was invented for radio personalities & industry types to describe new/modern rock.Kind of like 'grunge'...
