Vintage Louis Armstrong

January 25, 1932, Chicago, IL

Lyrics:

I don't want you

But I hate to lose you

You've got me in between

The devil and the deep blue sea

I forgive you

'Cause I can't forget you

You've got me in between

The devil and the deep blue sea

I oughta cross you off my list

But when you come knockin' at my door

Fate seems to give my heart a twist

And I come running back for more

I should hate you

But mamma, instead I guess I love you

You've got me in between

The devil and the deep blue sea

Louis did not record a lot of solos on muted horn. This is one of them. Hear the contrast when he pulls the mute out for the last 8 bars. I think this is a masterpiece.

Armstrong blew a beautiful horn. If you want to hear how Jazz evolves, listen to Thelonious Monk's take on this tune. Just the way he deconstruct's the melody is amazing.
