A lot of recording artist in the 70s and 80s remade Jackie De Shannon songs because they had lyrics that were ahead of their time. "What the world needs now", "Put a little love in your heart", "Needles and pins", and "Bette Davis eyes" were given new energy with a different arrangement and emphasis on different phrases. If not for my musical snob uncle I never would have known those songs were remakes.

May I submit -Two very ordinary songs transformed by exceptional creativity -amazingly the originals of both were created by exceptional talents in their own right, but neither could have foreseen the potential of their original mediocre efforts.Bette Davis Eyes :- Kim Carnes interpretation of this Jackie DeShannon originalTell Me How :- Nancy Griffith's outstanding version of a Buddy Holly original

Different - in a good way. I like both versions.

Is this song's co-writer, Donna Weiss, a former member of the MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN "CHOIR?"

I really like her original version. it's got a bouncy honky tonk vibe to it.

I like Jackie DeShannon, but not this arrangement and I'm sure she was absolutely delighted when Kim Carnes reimagined this turkey. Oh, Happy Payday for Jackie!

No, Zick- Please reread-- my mother danced to "Deep Purple" in the 30's. Most folks think that the first time it was around was the April Stevens-Nino Tempo version which came out in Nov.,1963. It was first published in 1933, scored for big bands in 1934, and had lyrics added in 1938. I was comparing it to Bette Davis Eyes, written by De Shannon & Weiss in 1974, but really became successful in 1981 when Kim Carnes did it.

You're saying that Bette Davis Eyes has origins in the 1930s?? Wowww.

If you are familiar with Deep Purple that April Stevens and Nino Tempo that came out in the 60's. My mother danced to it when it was a "big band" hit in the 30's . Your last Ripley's' believe it or not is that April Stevens and Nino Tempo are a brother -sister act. If you'll look her up in "images" you'll see how pretty she is. She could've given Natalie Wood a run for her money in movies.

I actually like it better than the Carnes' version.

Had I heard this one first, I would have thought "cute" and never listened to it again. Carnes' version--her sexual breathing--tells the story of Bette Davis as much as her eyes.

This song sounds a lot older than 1974 based on the musical styling...it could be easily a 1950s song.

Well ya learn something new every day! Thanks for that! I believe I now know what one of my aunts meant when she said "There are some songs ya want do dance the dirty dog shimmy to" She then proceeded to do an hilarious all body shimmy. I need to hook her up with this one!

What an awakening hearing this! Like hearing Dylan's original "Watchtower" after years of hearing the Jimi Hendrix cover over and over in classic rock rotation.

With all due respect to DeShannon, I'll stick with Carnes' cover.

That sound was very common in early 70s rock. Just ask the Stones and Elton John. Heard of those guys?
