Thank you for the information. Yes the Octave here has very heavy strings. It is a rather difficult instrument to play. I have played mine but a few times. Have a good day my friend. I like your playing. You have a strong command of the instrument. Marie

An octave mandolin (or tenor mandola in Europe) is shorter with thicker strings. This instrument is an Irish bouzouki. Long strigs (just like a folk guitar) with extra light gauge for a lon sustain.

'bastard child' is a little harsh. It's just a evolution of a traditional instrument ... Things like this happen every day ... The bouzouki itself is an evolution of the tambura and comes from a very old tradition of long necked lutes from middle east, like buzuq (Turkey), tar (Iran) etc., probably 4000 BC.

Very common Greek melody played with exceptional Irish attitude. I could dance to the tune. Thanks

I remember when Beth was first learning to play that thing...that is an 8-string Irish bouzouki, a bastard child of the Greek bouzouki...she is also a master of the 10-string Irish bouzouki as well as oboe and 4, 5 and 6 string bass.

Suena muy ese instrumento, el bouzuki, se parece al laúd. Me gusta su interpretación, conecta con el interior de las personas.

Well I just did some research and found that though it looks a lot like the Octave Mandolin I have in its built, it certainly does not sound like it. You must be correct. There are a lot of instruments out there that have different names in different countries but are the same instrument. It is difficult to really tell but by the tuning it seems. My octave has a very long neck and is heavy to play. I love the sound but not the hard work on the fingers. It is good to keep learning though.

Correct, this is her 8 string Bouzouki, (or her banjo as she describes it when boarding an airplane). She also has a 10 string bouzouki (lower course) and a new electric 8 string she's using on the new album..
