Bert Ambrose's orchestra plays "Cuban Pete", sung by Evelyn Dall - recorded June 10th, 1936.

Probably one of the earliest versions of this song, made popular (again) by Jim Carrey in the movie "The Mask".

After a bit of research I have discovered this was recorded on June 10th 1936. Harry Roy also recorded it - on June the 9th! So Harry Roy was first, but only by 24 hours! Not sure which record was released first, though, those are the recording dates. Mantovani also released a version in 1936. The first American band to release the song on record as far as I can tell was was Henry Heidt,, a bit later in 1936. The sheet music he released with the record describes it as 'The European Sensation'. I get the impression the song was probably a big dance hit in the Ballrooms and the bands were competing to get their version onto record.

The song was written by Joseph Norman Sternberg, from Liverpool, England in 1936. He used the pseudonym 'Jose Norman' and had his own Rhumba band in London (They spelled Rhumba with a 'h' in those days... The rhythm isn't an authentic rumba anyway, Rhumba just meant anything with a Cuban feel). I have never found a recording by Norman's Rhumba band - so I think this version could well be the very earliest.

You could have mentioned: Louis Armstrong with Norman, Joe Loss, Charles Pillow, Hugo Rassmussen, Sven Sjoholms and the Dorian Group. I bet there's more too! LOL and almost forgot - George Barnes with Bing Crosby.
