Good to hear it again. I had the 78 in the 50's. (Also Charlie Spivak's.) I was never sure if this trumpet solo was Ziggy Elman or Harry James. I think as an earlier post says, it was Ziggy. He played the competing duet with Chuck Peterson in Tommy Dorsey's 'Well Get It.' A great side. Thanks very much for this.

I like it but I really just looked it up to see how she dresses when she sings the song but it only shows a couple pictures

This is the best version of Martha Tilton with Benny Goodman of this song, being the original. Great upload.

1939 - Benny Goodman and his orchestra recorded "And the Angels Sing." Martha Tilton was the vocalist on the song.+YouTube your database is mucking around as it said that there was no record of Benny Goodman! I had to use "And the Angels Sing" to get this to show up!#dapimusic #mymusichangout #bigbandmusic #jazzmusic #bennygoodman #marthatilton #onthisday #onthisdate

Benny Goodman, Ziggy Elman, Lionel Hampton, Johnny Mercer (lyrics) and Martha Tilton -- with that amount of truly amazing talent, it's no wonder this tune was so popular. 1939 was an amazing year for music (and movies). It was as if the world had to enjoy one last sweet fling before the horrors and sorrows of The Second World War.

I dedicate this wondrous tune in VERY loving memory of My Heavenly-Resplendent Wife, My Eternal Love, My Barbra Rose. Barb -- you're still smiling and the angels are still singing in Heaven. Barb -- Yours' is the face I adore (Forever). I pray to Jesus to send you back for me very, very soon, Barb. I'll be waiting for you, My Matchless Gem. -- Your best friend and your eternally-adoring/loving husband, Walt.

Saw Benny at Disneyland in 1962. But in the '40's ,on radio,we listened to him when I was a kid and had an old group of 78's to prove it.

Russian, Balkan, Yiddische, maybe, but when the trumpet takes it home at about 3:12, it's pure American. They all done it good.

Responding to myytid0 and blappazappa - Ziggy Elman's solo does sound like Hava Nagila but Hava Nagila is itself a song with folk roots in the music of Russia and other eastern European societies, so it's not unlikely it sounds like songs from other countries and possibly even from the Balkans.

Solo on the trumpet reminds me of the Serbian military kolo (folk dance) from the First World War called, Svištovka "or gunsman's kolo. Anyway, these are the sounds from the Balkans, and belong to the folk sounds of Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. We are honored to great musician like Benny Goodman used our folk motifs in this evergreen composition ...Thanks for the post :D !
