People should interpret music how they want to whether its how the artist intended or not, its totally personal and definitely shouldn't cause arguments particularly over such beautiful music.

Shivers. Every time. Even if it isn't about someone directly related to Ben, stories like this have certainly happened. This illustrates the pain that surrounds depression and suicide and how it effects everyone that you wouldn't think would care ("the whole town stood there.. Looking for something wholesome and good")

There was a talented young musician from Totnes who was killed by a tree branch falling on her car on the way back from an event of some kind. I wonder if that is what he is referring to. Terribly sad.

I hvae been obsessed with this song for the past forever, but usually I don't listen to the lyrics so I figured it was this happy song but man!! I actually started listening to it just now and holy crap. I never expected that! perfectly made!

Guys, I know it adds to song atmosphere when you think that the lyrics are based on a real experience, but Ben himself made a comment about it that lead us to think in another direction "was an experiment with something heavy lyrically against an upbeat tune. The songs based in the woods round the back of town where I go on walks, there's a gnarly old rope swing and some pretty epic scenery round there."The lyrics are way too detailed and well-done to be made up? That's why it requires a hell of a songwriter to do such a thing, and Ben is a hell of a songwriter!! A guy who looks at a rope swing in a tree and delivers a songs like that is truly amazing and talented, no doubt, but let him become a legend by what he truly is.

I guess another meaning to the "people taking cover people holding shame. Oh you'd have laughed your heart out" part is that she would have reached out to people, who'd ridiculed her for being troubled and wanting to kill herself, and now they are guilty and she would have laughed at them.

"You would've laughed your heart out" That line ties the whole song together and really pushes the meaning I think. Really good lyric to end the song on.

Does anyone know where you can buy this in America? Europe has all the good music...

on a really weird note, this song reminds me quite a bit of "Looking for Alaska" by John Green. If you haven't already read it, you should! :)

Oh and also, what are the end lyrics?"You would've left your heart out"?"You would've laughed your heart out?""You went and left your heart out?""You'd left your heart out"?I don't understand the 'laughed' one, why would she have laughed her heart out?

Superb song. So powerful and ripe with emotion. Beautifully written, beautifully performed - as always with Ben. Does anybody know the story behind it? Is it literal? I've read a lot of things claiming it's about his girlfriend taking her own life and that is also what inspired Every Kingdom, does anyone know if this is true? After re-listening to Every Kingdom it certainly seems a legitimate possibility - Gracious, Everything, Only Love, Promise - so many tracks on there make sense with that in mind, can anyone confirm? How does he not completely break down when playing it!!!??
