I'm pretty sure this is an homage, not a rip off. Charlotte Gainsbourg has played with Beck in the past as you guys probably all know better than I do. I'm sure there would have been some sort of scandal if he actually stole the contents of the song. Awesome rendition I think, but "Melody" is obviously cooler.

For my money Sea Change is the best break up record of all time, followed closely by Dylan's 1997 Time Out of Mind. Amazing stuff, this song would be amazing even if it were just an instrumental. Borrowed strings or not, so wistful and deep.

relatively unknown? Gainsbourg is hugely famous! I know what you mean though, you hear paper tiger and fall in love with the strings... then you find out they were pinched from another song... it kind of lessens the amazingness, but it's best to get over it because it's a great track and thinking about stolen samples is a waste of time!
